Wild Weather at SFX!!

Well we had some interesting weather today at school!

It was very exciting!

We are learning about Mapping. Today Mrs E shared a Google Map with us, which showed us our school and a local cafe. We worked in groups to write directions for how to get from our school to the cafe.

What are the chances?

In Maths, we are learning about Chance.

Today we used the words CERTAIN, LIKELY, UNLIKELY and IMPOSSIBLE to describe the likelihood of events happening. We made a chance line and decided where to put some events.

Do you agree with where we placed the events?
Can you think of any other chance words?

Science Experiments

Last week we had a science afternoon where we carried out lots of experiments. We learnt lots and had a great time working with children and teachers from other classes.

Click the link below to see how we made play dough.

Making Playdough

Have you ever made play dough?
Was your recipe different to ours?
Why do you think the recipes differ?

We also made Wiz Fiz.

And Oobleck.

AND Popcorn.

What a day!

Meausuring Capacity

Yesterday in Maths, we started learning about CAPACITY. When you measure the capacity of a container, you are measuring how much it holds.

We took a lot of different containers to the sandpit and measured their capacity. After we explored on our own, we did an experiment to find out which of two containers held less. First we estimated, then we tested it by filling one and transferring the sand into the other.

We had lots of fun doing this activity, and we’re going back today to learn some more. Here are some photos of our activity.

Do you know how to measure the capacity of containers?

How would you compare the capacity of different containers?

What clues would you look for to make your estimates about whether a container would hold more or less than another?

Enviroweek Wrap Up!

This week is Enviroweek, and the Grade 2 students have embraced it whole-heartedly!

We decided to take the ‘Foodie Challenge’ and have been trying to eat and drink fresh and reduce our waste.

As well as the ‘Foodie Challenge’, the students have been challenging their own behaviour all week in lots of ways, to contribute to a more sustainable Australia.

Here are some of the changes we have made.

Enviroweek – Foodie Challenge

Next week is Enviroweek and SFX is joining in the fun! We are being challenged to take positive everyday action for a sustainable Australia.

The Grade 2s have decided to take the ‘Foodie Challenge‘. We are challenging ourselves to eat and drink fresh next week, and are aiming to bring ‘Nude Food‘ to school. We are hoping that our actions will have these benefits:

  • Create less pollution
  • Contribute less waste to landfill
  • Healthy diet, stronger bodies
  • Less processed fat and sugar

More information can be found at the website http://www.enviroweek.org/

How can you contribute to a sustainable Australia? What does ‘Nude Food’ mean to you?

This week in Grade 2 we are learning about Fables. Fables are short stories with a lesson to be learnt – this is called a ‘Moral‘. They are a kind of narrative which have been around for a long time and many people have re-written their own versions. iIn fact, we are writing our own versions of “Town Mouse and Country Mouse” right now!

Here are the ‘Bee’ and ‘Beetle’ literacy groups reading “The Lion and the Mouse” and “The Ant and the Grasshopper“.

Fairy Tales

This week we have been learning about the genre of ‘Fairy Tales’ – made up stories which are usually written for children and contain magical elements.

Today we explored our understanding of the well-known characters from Fairy Tales, and challenged ourselves to think creatively about their actions within the stories. We made ‘WANTED’ posters for a character of our choice – we certainly are creative!

Here are a few that were finished today.
